Can't sleep UPDATED WITH ANSWERS

So here's a song meme that Rhan posted. I got in on hers too late to get many of the songs, but then, there were a lot I wouldn't have known anyway. Mine may be more accessible. Disclaimer: I'm using iTunes on the laptop rather than my iPod, because I don't have much loaded on my iPod. And I'm skipping the instrumentals instead of using onomatopeia. ... Although that would be fun: BOM BOM BOM deedle DEEDLE deedle deedle deedle doot. Doot. De-doot.

Step 1: Put your iPod player on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly. (Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!)

Comments

#7: Little Drummer Boy. Probably by Bing Crosby

#14: Enter Sandman. Metallica

#23: One. Three Dog Night.

#26: Killing me Softly. Roberta Flack.

#29: Very Superstitious. Stevie Wonder?

I recognized all of the above plus --
9. I know it's Paul Simon. Slip Sliding Away?
12. Dream On Aerosmith
19. Who Do You Think You're Foolin'? Paul Simon
21.You just had this in one of your posts but I don't remember what it was!
22. It's a Dylan song -- Something Blues
23. Or it could be Aimee Mann's version ... (that's on MY iPod)
25. Got Brass in Pocket The Pretenders
30. Locomotive Breath Jethro tull

Maybe I should try again AFTER caffeine!

Ariel: Yes! Gee, how'd you know it was Bing (and Bowie)?

Nicole - partial credit for the two Paul Simons, but you didn't get either song right. Sorry! Also partial credit for Subterranean Homesick Blues: who ever knows Dylan song titles, unless they're like "Lay Lady Lay"?

Check on "Brass in Pocket," and well done! R and I always call it the "Sausage Song," because it sounds like she says "Gonna use my arms, gonna use my legs, gonna use my style, gonna use my sausage ..."

And, of course, "Dream On" is right.

YES. #2 has been haunting me and I just got it:
One Headlight The Wallflowers
LOVE that song!

Drat it all! I"m too late to look smart- so I'll take up the crumbs...

2) One Headlight- Wallflowers.
3) Just Another Day- John Mellencamp?
20) Hey Ninetween- Steely Dan (Gaucho?)
21) Diamonds and Rust- Joan Baez

#9 Paul Simon, Still Crazy After All These Years
#19 Paul Simon, Loved Me Like A Rock
#21 Joan Baez, Diamonds and Rust
and I knew #7, #23, #26, and #29, even before looking at the other comments.

R - you DO look smart! You're the only one to get an album, so far (Gaucho is correct, for 500 extra credit points). And you got "Diamonds and Rust" - surprised me!

Does it go without saying that I don't even know all these songs, and had to look them up in order to post them? Such as #8 (which is also Dylan) and #17 (The Mamas and The Papas).

Nicole, Nina got the Paul Simon titles. Nina ... would you mind taking a closer look at #18?

I thought these were easy (and others were hard):
6. Friend of the Devil: Grateful Dead, "American Beauty"
18. Peace Train: Cat Stevens

*happy*
#27, I feel obliged to say, is Phish's "The Squirming Coil," which for all of Phish's silly-nonsense lyrics, is one of the better ones you could've landed on!

*continues singing*
"...tried yesterday to get away, and hitchhike to the beach
I saw Satan on the beach, trying to catch a ray
He wasn't quite the speed of light, and the squirming coil -- it got awaaaaaaaay, it got away..."

"I'd like to lick the coil someday
Like Icarus, who had to pay
With melting wax and feathers brown
He tasted it on his way down."

What fun!

*laughing*
Is there a bonus for identifying the instrumental in your explanation?

Yesssss! Check on Grateful Dead (I KNEW you'd know that one) and "Peace Train," and glad to hear from the Phish sector.

Certainly there's a bonus for the instrumental, esp. since I think I made it up.

Funny you should mention Mokey - we watched an episode last night in which Red was jealous of Mokey and wanted to become her. Easy to see why. Everybody likes Mokey!

OK, Al will get nos. 15 and 28, but the rest will need a hint. Here are the albums:

1. Ride the Lightning
4. Katy Lied
5. Best of Joe Cocker
8. Blood on the Tracks
10. Wintersong
11. Catch Bull at Four
13. Tea for the Tillerman
16. Ride the Lightning

Sure, put me on the spot...

15 is "Either Light Up or Leave Me Alone" by Traffic off the Low Spark of High Heeled Boys album.

28 is "Urge for Going" by Joanni Mitchell. Don't know the album since I learned it off a Tom Rush (Classic Rush) album

I should have gotten Katy Lied since one of the crew I was with in Sudan played the tape constantly (for 3 months) is it "Everyone's going to the movies"?

Oh phooey. I kept looking at #18, but "I've been lately thinking about my life's time..." kept bumping it out of my brain. Too many Windows open, not enough memory.

People related to me, or hell, just feel like it, should go do my meem.

Yep yep yep! I too learned "Urge for Going" from Tom Rush, not Joni Mitchell, and I still like his version better. Great song. And yes, the Steely Dan/Katy Lied one is "Everyone's Gone to the Movies."

"I've been lately thinking about my life's time" ... John Denver? I can't quite get to the refrain to figure out what song it is.

Ariel, I didn't do so well on yours. Now there's one haunting me. Arrggghh, I KNOW that song ...

Is this what Nina meant?

Leon Russell: A Song For You

I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you...

Solo album "Leon Russell", 1970

(also covered by a couple dozen other well-known artists...)

Mmmm, no, although it's a good song, and I can totally hear Leon Russell singing it. I'm pretty sure hers is a John Denver song that either she or I learned to play on guitar. One line of the refrain has bounced into my head: "And I have to say it now, it's been a good life all in all." But I still can't remember what the song is.

Poems, Prayers and Promises! I can't believe YOU didn't get that one! Ha.
